Mighty Mule Access Control Installation: The Sherman Oaks Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Mighty Mule-compatible access control components throughout Sherman Oaks, with most replacements running between $290 and $640 installed, depending on whether it’s a control board, keypad, limit switch, or full receiver rebuild. Most access control failures we see in Sherman Oaks show up the same way: the gate opens fine one day, then ignores the remote or keypad the next, or it moves a few inches and stops, or the wife’s clicker works while the husband’s doesn’t. Ironworks Gate Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Mighty Mule, but we’ve installed and repaired their access control systems for decades, and we keep the most replaced Mighty Mule control parts on the truck when we pull up to your driveway.
Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To
Mighty Mule has used several control systems over the years, and the access control parts are not interchangeable between series. The older MM260, MM360, and MM371 series used a control board mounted inside the arm or in a separate housing near the gate post. The newer MM562, MM572, and MM600 series moved to a combined receiver-and-control module, which means a keypad or receiver swap on one of those is a different part number and a different wiring layout than on your neighbor’s 2012 MM360. The fastest way to identify what you have is to look at the metal tag on the opener arm itself: the model number is stamped there, not on the control box. If that tag has worn smooth, we match the board by the connector pattern and the number of wires coming off the limit switch. For Mighty Mule specifically, we generally recommend OEM Mighty Mule boards and keypads over generic aftermarket equivalents, because the aftermarket boards for this brand have a reputation in Sherman Oaks’s sun and heat for drifting limit settings and failing receiver signal after a hot summer. A genuine Mighty Mule board costs more, but it’s the difference between a one-visit fix and another call six months later.
Signs Your Mighty Mule Access Control Installation Is Failing
- The gate ignores the remote from the street, but works from the keypad. This usually points to the receiver section of the control board losing sensitivity, not the remote itself. We see it on Sherman Oaks gates that face south and cook in the afternoon sun; the receiver capacitors dry out and the range drops to ten feet.
- The keypad beeps and lights up, but the gate does not move. The keypad is sending a signal; the control board is not acting on it. Most often it’s a burned relay on the board. Occasionally it’s a cut wire underground where a landscaper or tree root worked its way through the conduit.
- The gate opens partway and reverses, or opens fine and will not close. On Mighty Mule systems this is the limit switch or the obstruction sensor loop wearing out. In Sherman Oaks, the fine dust from the hills blowing across the Valley gets into the switch contacts and causes ghost signals.
- One remote works; the second one will not program. Mighty Mule control boards from the MM360 series on hold a limited number of transmitter codes. If the memory chip is failing, the board will not accept a new code even after clearing the old ones. That’s a board replacement, not a remote problem.
- The whole system has power, but nothing moves and the board clicks repeatedly. That click is the relay trying to fire. On Mighty Mule boards from the early 2000s still running in older Sherman Oaks homes, the solder joints on the relay back crack from years of vibration and heat cycles. A board-level repair is possible on some of these, but replacement is the honest fix.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Mighty Mule access control replacement in Sherman Oaks, plan on these installed price ranges:
- Control board replacement: $290-$480 installed, depending on series
- Keypad replacement or wiring repair: $180-$310 installed
- Receiver module or antenna upgrade: $190-$350 installed
- Full access control rebuild (board, keypad, wiring, limit switch): $520-$640 installed
The spread comes from which Mighty Mule series you have and how much of the old wiring is still sound. The price we quote is the price you pay, agreed before we touch a bolt. Every access control installation we do in Sherman Oaks carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it’s not right, we come back and make it right, no argument, no extra charge. The board itself carries the Mighty Mule manufacturer’s warranty; our labor and wiring are covered by ours.
DIY or Call Us?
There are two things you can safely check before you call. First, confirm the gate arm has power: is the transformer plugged in and is the outlet live. Second, check for a tripped breaker on the circuit that feeds the gate opener. After that, stop. Mighty Mule opener arms run on 12V DC inside, but the access control board and the power supply conversion involve live 120V AC at the transformer, and the arm itself stores mechanical energy in the gear train. A control board swap on the wrong series or a crossed wire at the limit switch can fry a new board in seconds and leave the gate stuck open all night. Victor Salinas has been working Mighty Mule systems since before the brand name changed from GTO, and he’s pulled enough fried boards out of homeowner-installed boxes to say this plainly: the cost of the board you save by doing it wrong is less than the cost of the second board you’ll buy to fix it. If you want to check the model number and give us a call, we’ll tell you over the phone if it’s likely a simple board swap or something deeper. The call is free.
FAQs
A properly installed Mighty Mule control board in Sherman Oaks lasts between 8 and 14 years, depending on sun exposure and how often the gate cycles. Gates that face west or south and run 20-plus cycles a day tend to the short end of that range. Heat, not cold, is what kills these boards in the San Fernando Valley.
Some early Mighty Mule boards can be repaired at the relay or capacitor level, but we do not recommend it. A board that’s failed once is usually announcing that other components are close behind. Replacement gets you a fresh warranty and a board that won’t strand your gate open next month.
Most Mighty Mule access control replacements in Sherman Oaks take between one and two hours on site. If the wiring under the driveway is damaged, add an hour for a new wire run. We carry the common boards for the MM360, MM562, and MM600 series on the truck, so most jobs are done in one visit.
We keep the most common Mighty Mule control boards, keypads, receiver modules, and limit switches on our service trucks and in our shop. For less common parts or older series, we can typically have them within two to four business days through our suppliers. We also stock compatible parts for LiftMaster, Ghost Controls, and DoorKing, so if your access control failure crosses brands, we can sort that out in one visit.
If your Mighty Mule access control is acting up in Sherman Oaks, call us at (925) 590-4289. You’ll get a live person on the phone, every time, and we’ll get a technician out to look at it. We fix it right the first time, or we come back and fix it again – simple as that.
