The part that fails on a Linear system is almost never the motor itself. It is the metal around it: the operator mounting bracket, the gate frame where the arm attaches, or a hinge weld that has been carrying too much weight for too many years. Which Linear Models This Applies To

We weld and fabricate for every Linear operator still common in Sherman Oaks driveways: the LDO swing-arm series, the LS and SL slide gate lines, and the older megacode-receiver models that plenty of homes on the south side of Ventura Boulevard still run. Each one mounts differently, and each one stresses the gate frame differently. A swing arm pushes and pulls the gate leaf at a single point, which concentrates force at two welds. A slide gate spreads the load differently, but the chain bracket and the wheel guides take the abuse instead.

Here is the gotcha with Linear that we see repeatedly: the arm bracket that ships with an LDO operator bolts to the gate with slotted holes for adjustment. Over time, those slots allow movement, even when the bolts are tight. The movement works the weld at the bracket base until it cracks. If the bracket is simply re-welded without addressing the slop, it fails again in six months. We re-weld and then reinforce the bracket so it cannot walk.

For identifying your part, the operator model number is on a label inside the control box, and the gate post brackets usually have a Linear part stamp on the back face. Bring us a photo of the break and we can usually identify it from that alone. When replacement parts are needed, we carry both OEM Linear brackets and our own fabricated equivalents. For a bracket that has failed once, our fabricated version is often the better choice because we can make it thicker at the stress point. For arms and chains, OEM is the right call.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags an inch or more at the free end. This means a hinge weld is stretching or a hinge post has shifted. The sag puts extra load on the operator every time it cycles, and the operator arm becomes the next thing to fail.
• The operator arm makes a creaking or popping sound at the attachment point. That is the sound of a weld flexing that should not flex. Once you hear it, the crack is already there, even if you cannot see it yet.
• You notice rust-colored dust or a hairline line near where the arm bolts to the gate. That is metal fatigue. The crack opens and closes with each cycle, working the rust out of the seam. It will not self-heal.
• The gate shudders or jerks during travel, but the motor sounds fine. The operator is fighting a bind, usually at a failing weld point or a bent bracket. The motor can keep doing that for a while, but the metal cannot.
• The gate stops mid-travel and reverses, but no obstruction is visible. The operator’s obstruction sensor is reading the extra drag from a failing weld as a physical block. The problem is not electronic; it is structural.

DIY or Call Us?

There are things you can check yourself, and there are things you should not touch. You can safely look for visible cracks, run your hand along a bracket to feel for movement (with the operator unplugged), and tighten a bolt that has backed out. Those are checks, not fixes, and they will tell you where the problem is.

What we do not recommend anyone tackle at home is the welding itself. This is high-amperage work on structural steel that holds a gate that can weigh 300 pounds or more. A bad weld looks fine for a few weeks. Then it lets go, and a heavy gate that was supported suddenly is not, which is how people get hurt and vehicles get dented.
