BFT Access Control Installation: The Sherman Oaks Owner’s Guide

BFT access control installation in Sherman Oaks typically runs $425 to $1,100 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a keypad, card reader, or the full control board, and most jobs are completed in a single visit. We stock BFT-compatible control boards, keypads, radio receivers, and photocells on our trucks, so if your system quit recognizing remotes or the keypad has gone dark, we can usually have it running the same day we arrive. Most owners find us the hard way: the gate works manually but won’t respond to the keypad, or the remotes stopped working overnight, or the gate opens but won’t close without being coaxed. Victor Salinas has been untangling BFT control issues in Sherman Oaks driveways long enough to know that once the electronics start acting intermittently, the problem rarely fixes itself.

Call (925) 590-4289

We’re an independent gate company, not affiliated with BFT, but we work on their equipment every week and keep the common replacement parts in stock. If your BFT access control has failed, call (925) 590-4289 and a live person answers – day or night.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has been making gate operators since the 1980s, and their access control line spans three rough generations. The older BFT Deimos, Aries, and Phobos series use a separate control board with screw-terminal wiring, while the newer BFT Rigel, Lux, and IGEA lines moved to modular boards with plug-in radio receivers. The catch for Sherman Oaks homeowners: a receiver from a Deimos will not talk to a Rigel board, even though both say BFT on the housing.

Before you buy anything, look for the model plate on the operator housing or the control board itself. BFT stamps the model and production year there, usually near the terminal strip. If the plate is gone, a photo of the board sent to us is often enough to identify it. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: BFT factory boards are the right choice when the operator is less than ten years old, but for older Deimos and Aries units, a quality aftermarket universal receiver often costs half as much and works every bit as well, and we’ll tell you honestly which one makes sense before we sell you either. We don’t upsell factory parts on vintage motors that don’t need them.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad lights up but the gate won’t move. The keypad is sending the signal, but the receiver or control board isn’t processing it. This is typically a failed relay on the board or a receiver that’s lost its programming.
  • Remotes work from two feet away, then quit at ten. The radio receiver’s sensitivity is degrading, and in Sherman Oaks, where we get real summer heat, the capacitors on older BFT receiver boards dry out faster than in cooler climates.
  • Gate opens on its own or reverses without a command. A failing photocell or a short in the control board can send phantom signals. This is a safety issue as much as a nuisance, and it should be addressed the day it starts.
  • Intermittent response after rain. Moisture in the keypad housing or a degraded seal on the control enclosure is a common BFT-specific failure, especially on keypads mounted on unshaded south-facing walls in the Valley.
  • Nothing at all: no lights, no click, no response. This is usually a dead control board or a blown transformer. If the operator is older than fifteen years, sometimes the honest answer is replacement rather than repair.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what BFT access control installation costs in Sherman Oaks, parts and labor included:

  • Replacement keypad: $425-$650 installed
  • Radio receiver replacement: $380-$550 installed
  • Control board replacement: $550-$1,100 installed, depending on BFT model and whether a new receiver is required
  • Photocell pair: $180-$280 installed
  • Diagnostic service call (applied toward any repair): $89

Every price is settled up front, before we turn a single bolt. You’ll know the exact number and approve it before any work starts, and that number doesn’t change when the job is done. We also apply a $50 discount on any repair over $250, and every completed job carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something isn’t right, we come back and make it right. No paperwork, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things you can safely check before you call. Confirm the operator has power. Check that the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped. Look at the keypad for obvious water intrusion or a cracked housing. Those are all fair game.

What we’d caution against is opening the control enclosure and probing terminals. BFT boards carry live 120-volt wiring even when the gate isn’t moving, and a short across the wrong two terminals can fry a $600 board that would have been a simple repair. The control board is not the place to learn which wire does what. If the simple checks don’t identify the problem, call (925) 590-4289 and we’ll diagnose it properly, with the right meters and a truck stocked for BFT systems.
